WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE UK ETA?
GCC nationals (Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) were already eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for their UK visits. Beginning November 27, 2024, citizens of 49 additional non-European countries also became eligible for the UK ETA, with applications opening the same day for travel starting on or after January 8, 2025. The scheme was further expanded to include EU citizens, with applications opening on March 5, 2025, for travel from April 2025 onwards.
How does ETA work?
Travelers from eligible countries must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before visiting the United Kingdom. The ETA is a digital entry permit required for short stays of up to six months for tourism, business, transit, or visiting family.
To apply for a UK ETA, applicants must have a valid biometric passport and an active email address. The application is completed online and requires a debit or credit card to pay the 94.00Є which includes and our service fee. Apple Pay and Google Pay are also accepted.
Applicants must provide basic personal details, including full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport information. Security screening is part of the process, and the application is checked against UK and international security databases. Most applications are processed within minutes, though some may take longer.
Once approved, the ETA confirmation is sent to the applicant’s email. Travelers must present their ETA before boarding a flight to the UK, as airlines are required to verify it prior to departure. An ETA does not guarantee entry; border officers may still deny admission upon arrival.
The UK ETA is mandatory for citizens of the EU, EEA, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Australia, and several Gulf countries including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Applications for EU nationals opened on March 5, 2025, for travel beginning in April 2025.
What Is the Purpose of the UK ETA?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a new digital entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting the United Kingdom. It is designed to enhance border security by prescreening individuals before they arrive.
Starting in 2024, travelers from eligible countries must obtain an ETA before entering the UK for short stays, including tourism, business, or transit. The system helps UK authorities assess whether a traveler poses a risk related to public safety, illegal immigration, or health concerns.
How the UK ETA Works
- Application Process: Travelers must complete an online ETA application before their trip. The form collects basic personal details such as passport information, travel plans, and contact details.
- Security Screening: The system automatically checks the applicant’s data against UK security databases. If no issues are flagged, the ETA is typically approved within minutes.
- Manual Review: If the system detects a potential concern, the application may be referred for manual review by UK border officials.
- Validity: Once approved, a UK ETA is valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires—whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries during its validity period.
Similar Systems
The UK ETA is comparable to other digital travel authorizations like the U.S. ESTA and Canada’s eTA, offering a streamlined process for low-risk travelers while maintaining border control.
